Visual artists wanted for Cedar Rapids festival

Whether you’re a design student with a knack for visual art, or you just dabble a bit on canvas or in paint, an opportunity to display your artistic endeavors is coming up.

The Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Arts Council has announced its call for applications for their 15th annual Celebration of the Arts.

The event will be held on June 16(Father’s Day) on the grounds of the historic Brucemore mansion.

Amy Salmon, acting president of the Metropolitan Arts Council, said that they are looking for art in a variety of media.

“[We are looking for what] would be considered fine art, which would be watercolor, acrylic, oil,” she said.

“Drawing, painting, fiber and jewelry all fit into that too.

“Some people do metal work, [and] there’s some mixed media work, ceramics, glass.”

So just about everyone’s particular forte would qualify for applying. Salmon said there was just one exception.

“I guess the only qualification would be that [the artwork] be ‘fine art,’ instead of ‘craft art.'”

Salmon did say that many artists whose work is accepted for display at the Celebration of the Arts, college students should not be discouraged. They should definitely apply, if only for the learning experience.

“Students do get accepted,” she said. “Even if they don’t, they should apply to get practice in getting their slides together and doing everything they would have to do to enter any contest.”

Applications are due April 29. For more information, contact Amy Salmon at (319) 398-5322.

To apply for display, send slides of your artwork to the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Arts Council, P.O. Box 74860, Cedar Rapids, IA 52407.
