The Statler Brothers stay down-to-earth
April 18, 1996
“If countin’ flowers on the wall don’t bother you at all,” then drive down to Des Moines to hear the Statler Brothers in their first-ever appearance at the Civic Center. The show is tonight at 8 p.m.
The group, whose hit “Flowers on the Wall” recently appeared on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, is also known for other tunes such as “Bed of Roses,” “Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott,” “Hello Mary Lou” and “Atlanta Blue.”
These harmonizing Virginians sing folk-like jives about rural American life, memories and friendships. Their home-hitting lyrics and soothing sounds have driven their popularity through the roof and parked them among the stars.
The Statler Brothers have received over 500 awards, more than any other group in the history of country music, including three Grammy Awards and 46 Music City News Awards. They have also been chosen as the Country Music Association’s Vocal Group of the Year an amazing 11 times.
Despite their celebrity status, these four poets, Harold Reid, Phil Balsely, Jimmy Fortune and Don Reid, humbly reside in Stauton, Va., (population 22,000) and are true to their elementary school. The establishment that was the place of their primary schooling is now the location for their offices.
By the way, no, none of The Statler Brothers’ names is Statler. According to Brenda Mickle, publicity and public relations coordinator at the Civic Center, rumor has it that the name came from a Kleenex box in a hotel room.
Tickets to see these musical greats cost $24.75 and $29.75, and a few might be available. Call the Civic Center Box Office at 243-1109 to see if any more have been released.
