This weekend two Iowa State dance troops will be gathering for a performance in honor of a former guest performer who died in a show here at Iowa State.

Saturday at 7 p.m., Orchesis II and the Iowa State dance tour company will be performing a concert honoring former guest artist Richard Goltry in the Betty Toman Dance Studios in the Physical Education Building.

The variety of the music will cover a wide and eccletic selection of dance styles, said Janice Baker, assistant professor of dance. “The concert will be a wonderful look in to all the uses of dance in our society,” Baker said.

A major portion of the concert will be the two closing tunes, which will celebrate the life and career of Goltry, the guest performer who died while leading a Hawaiian dance at ISU on March 26.

Baker said she will be dancing a solo nuevo flamenco dance called “Remembrance,” and the whole group will be performing a movement called “The Passing of Souls” to “Pachebel’s Canon in D” to honor his memory.

“The music we will be performing reminds me of music that Richard used to play,” Baker said. “Closing is meant to uplift the memory of his spirit and to honor his generosity in sharing his knowledge with us.”

The performance will feature several soloists performing many types of dance, including solos by Cathy Flanigan a capella tap; Kristi Koplos, modern dance; Tara Hotop, Isadora Duncan tribute; Eneetra Livings, ballet; Jill Benton, jazz; Julie Koenit, acrobatic dancer, and Steven Nelson and Hotop in a pas de deux (dance for two) .

Baker also mentioned that the group would be performing a modern inter-generational piece with music by Miles Davis called “Stop Look and Listen.”

“This is a joyous occasion,” Baker said. “My life is always in dance and that’s what we’re doing now.” Tickets cost $3 at the door.
