Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Tim Floyd announced Thursday that he added Thurlon “Sam” Weaver to the Cyclone coaching staff as a full-time assistant coach.
Weaver, who joins Floyd and company from Alcorn State, has been the head Braves basketball coach for the past three seasons.
“Sam has had a major impact on the rebuilding of three programs, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University and now Alcorn State is reaping the benefits of his rebuilding ability,” Floyd said.
On a down note, ISU standout center Kelvin Cato has been suspended for the first three games of the 1996-97 basketball season due to what Floyd cited as Cato’s performance in and out of the classroom this spring.
“I’ve been extremely disappointed in his classroom performance, and his accountability in the weight room,” Floyd said. “If this continues, the suspension might grow. At the rate we’re going now, he might be ready to play by the Big 12.”
Cato, who transferred from South Alabama after his first semester in 1994-95, averaged 9.6 points per game last season to go along with a team-high average of 7.7 rebounds per game.
