Iowa State sweeps Winona State in twin bill
April 4, 1996
The Cyclone baseball team faced off against Winona State, and swept a pair of games from the Warriors in an afternoon doubleheader at Cap Timm Field on Wednesday. Iowa State took both games of the twin bill, 10-2 and 6-1.
In the first game, the Warriors jumped out to an early two-run advantage behind a run scoring triple from designated hitter Aaron Braund.
Braund was then batted in on a base hit from catcher Kurt Molls. But those were the only runs the Warriors could manage to get off Cyclone junior pitcher Dan Prehn, who allowed two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings of work.
The Cyclones began to turn up the heat on the Warriors in the bottom of the first.
After junior outfielder Mike Bahun grounded out to start out the game, senior outfielder Darrin DeReu tripled off Warrior pitcher Greg Posewitz.
Scott Vance followed up DeReu’s triple with a three-bagger of his own to bring in the first Cyclone run of the game. Vance scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Troy Logan.
The Cyclones struck again in the third inning when all nine batters in the ISU lineup got up to the plate. DeReu started the inning with a walk and immediately stole second base. The Cyclones scored three runs in the inning after two outs. Senior third baseman Sam Cox homered to drive in all three runs.
Iowa State struck again in the fourth inning, as Darrin DeReu scored his third run of the game after Logan reached base on a fielder’s choice to second.
“Our guys were doing a good job of situational hitting today,” Assistant Coach Jerry McNertney said. “In close games, the team starts to get a little tight, but that was not the case today.”
The Cyclones chased Posewitz out of the game with a sacrifice fly by DeReu scoring shortstop Ryan Harmon, who reached base by getting hit by a pitch for the second time in the game.
The ‘Clones scored three more runs in the sixth to push their total to ten.
Sophomore pitcher Steve Larkin came in to the game in the seventh inning to close out the game and secure the win for Prehn.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the temperature dropped but Cyclone pitching heated up. Senior right-hander Chris Allen held the Warriors to one run on three hits over 6 1/3 innings pitched. Allen also recorded seven strikeouts to go with five base on balls.
“Today we got really good pitching. The pitching stayed steady all day,” McNertney said. “Once we got ahead, our defense played well and it was hard for Winona State to score against us. It was difficult for them to gain any momentum.”
During the fifth inning, DeReu scored his 100th career run.
“I really hadn’t thought much about it. I guess it is sort of a big thing in my career,” DeRue said.
DeReu ended the day going 4-6 with three RBIs and four runs scored.
“I just got in a groove. Hopefully I can stay in it,” DeReu said. “For a while I wasn’t seeing the ball well. But today I was able to see the ball better. Finally I was able to hit the ball better.”
The Cyclones upped their record to 8-16. Thursday afternoon the Cyclones face off against Grand View College at 2:30 p.m.
Then, this weekend the ‘Clones will have three games against Ryan Minor and the Oklahoma Sooners at Cap Timm Field.
