The most popular truck on campus, or at least the one that gets the most action — kisses that is — was up for bids on Wednesday by those who were hoping to win a spot during the “Kiss the Car” contest.

Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Boys and Girls Club of Ames, in an effort to raise money for a new facility for the Boys and Girls Club, held an auction for one spot out of 30 to kiss the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. The contestant who kisses the truck the longest will win it.

The bidding, which was opened at $100, quickly weeded out those not serious about winning. Heather Hanlon, a senior in microbiology, shut the bidding down with her bid of $1,250. When Hanlon pays in full, she will be guaranteed a spot in the contest. If Hanlon doesn’t pay, the second highest bidder will be given the place. Hanlon was unavailable for comment.

Lindsay Falk, a senior in journalism and mass communication and publicity manager for the Boys and Girls Club as well as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said the high bid surprised everyone because the best they were hoping for was $500. Geff Gescheidler, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Ames, agreed that the large sum of money was a surprise.

“We didn’t know what to expect, but this is a pleasant surprise,” he said.

Fifteen other contestants in the kissing contest will be chosen through a raffle. The top six residence hall floors which donate the most money will each be able to designate a representative to kiss the truck, as will the top six donating greek houses. KCCQ will also give away two spots.

The “lip lock” will take place April 21, south of the Campanile. Gescheidler said it may take as many as three days of puckering up for the winner to be declared.
