Cyclone tennis struggles at Drake

The Iowa State women’s tennis team lost to a very talented Drake University team Wednesday 7-0 at the Beyer Hall Courts.

“I think it was a tough match for us to play a team the caliber of Drake in the middle of our Big Eight season,” head coach Michele Conlon said.

Drake, who is favored to win the Missouri Valley Conference, came into the match Wednesday fresh, as opposed to ISU who entered the match having played three tough matches over the weekend.

“I think our players were a little tired and rightfully so,” Conlon said, “I don’t think the scores we had were necessarily indicative of how we would usually match up against them.”

A bright spot for the Cyclones on Wednesday was the play of their number one doubles team of Erika Asmuss and Angie Miller.

After falling behind 3-6, they rallied to win 8-7.

“They played with good poise and positive energy on the court,” Conlon said of Asmuss’s and Miller’s play.

They Cyclones will now have a couple days of easy practice and will get some rest for their matches this weekend.

“We’ll have very light practices today and tomorrow before we play on Saturday and Sunday,” Conlon said.

Iowa State is currently in a stretch where they are playing six matches in 10 days, which Conlon said “is a very tough thing to do.”

The Cyclones will now return to their Big Eight portion of the schedule for two matches this weekend against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
