The Iowa State starters blew away the reserves, 42-7, in the annual spring game Saturday at Williams Stadium in Des Moines.

Over 6,000 fans were on hand to see often injured quarterback Todd Doxzon deliver a fully healthy performance.

Doxzon completed 13 of 24 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 26 yards. Iowa State Head Football Coach Dan McCarney praised his starting quarterback.

“Doxzon is a kid who can turn a bad play into a good one,” McCarney said.

Doxzon’s favorite target was no surprise, as wide receiver Ed Williams racked up six receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown. Williams’ touchdown grab was acrobatic and perhaps a little lucky.

The pass was tipped by Williams to cornerback Kevin Wilson who tipped it back to Williams for the score.

“I just stayed with it,” Williams said.

Last year’s Heisman Trophy finalist Troy Davis gained 111 yards for the cardinal squad.

Davis was also the recipient of two awards at halftime in recognition of his achievements last season. After the game, Davis answered questions surrounding his future plans of whether to enter the NFL draft next year or remain at Iowa State and finish his degree.

“I’d like to be back for my senior year but anything can change that,” Davis said.

If Davis does remain for his senior year, one factor in that decision could be the arrival of his brother Darren in the fall.

Davis expressed his desire to play in the Cyclone backfield with his brother.

Sophomore fullback Joe Parmentier displayed his ability to run through the opposition by catching a short pass and proceeding to bull his way over two defenders and into the end zone for a cardinal touchdown. Parmentier is listed at 250 pounds and appears to be able to use his size to its best possible advantage. Parmentier will definitely be one to watch next fall.

Defensively, linebacker Derrik Clark was the cardinal star, returning an interception 73 yards for a touchdown.

Freshman linebacker James Elmore led the cardinal team with 11 tackles, while junior linebacker Michael Cooper led the white squad with 15 tackles.

Quarterback Todd Bandhauer had a rough day for the white squad completing 8 of 19 passes for 81 yards.

Bandhauer threw one touchdown and was picked off three times.
