Cyclone women take third in BYU Dixie Classic

The Cyclone women’s golf team traveled to St. George, Utah, to participate in the Brigham Young University Dixie Classic on March 8-9.

The Cyclones finished in a close third place for the tournament, led by the performance of senior golfer Beth Bader.

Bader finished in a tie for third place, three strokes behind San Diego St. golfer Linds Donnelly.

Donnelly was the medalist for the tournament with a final card of 225 strokes.

As a team, the Cyclones also finished in third place, just five strokes back from the team titlist New Mexico.

Bader, with her 228 stroke card, finished in a tie for third with BYU golfer Susanne Gillemo.

The Cyclones also saw senior Holly Duncan, who was recently named the Big Eight golfer of the month in March, finish in the top 10 with a final card of 231 strokes.

Among the other Cyclones at the tournament included junior Gwynn Shepherd and sophomore Fiona Watson. Shepherd and Watson eached posted final cards of 237 strokes.

The final Cyclone golfer was Cathy Matthews, who posted 243 strokes over the 54 hole tournament.

The tournament featured a 17-0 team field, which saw the Cyclones finish just five strokes off of the pace, and one stroke behind runner-up Oregon State.

According to head coach Julie Manning, the performance helps the Cyclones emmensely, while preparing for the Big Eight Championship and NCAA East Regional bid.

“We needed to knock off some ranked and Big Eight teams,” Manning said.

Manning also expressed that the team hasn’t quite reached its potential thus far.

“We have not peaked yet by all means,” Manning said. “We hope to do so for the Big Eight tournament.”

“We have a great core of kids who are playing well right now,” she added. “I feel the momentum shifting towards us.”

Iowa State was able to finish ahead of two Big Eight teams.

Oklahoma State finished in fifth place, 18 strokes behind the Cyclones, while Nebraska took home sixth place with their final card of 954 strokes, another five strokes behind the Cowboys.

The Cyclones will next be in action at the final Big Eight Conference Championships at Glen Oaks Country Club in Des Moines on April 22 and 23.
