Cyclone softball team falls to Nebraska in 10

Iowa State softball head coach Deb Kuhn stated her squad’s need for more offense after dropping two games to Oklahoma last weekend.

With that request, the Cyclones delivered plenty of offense at Nebraska Wednesday, but came up short in an extra-inning affair, 9-7.

The Huskers came out strong by piling up seven runs through the first four innings.

The Cyclones struck back, though, with four runs in the top of the fifth inning and two in the top of the sixth.

Cyclone pitcher Jeannie Lobel, in relief of starter Courtney Dully, held Nebraska scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings.

With the Cyclones trailing by a single run in the top of the seventh, Debbie Nease reached base on an error and scored on another Nebraska miscue on a ball hit by ISU’s Kally Hogan.

Nease took the mound in relief of Lobel in the bottom of the seventh and proceeded to shut down the Nebraska offense in a duel with Nebraska reliever Angela Blackwood.

Nease would end up taking the loss however, giving up a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th.

Although the loss dropped the Cyclones to 1-3 in the conference, Hogan believes that the team’s record doesn’t reflect how the Cyclones have been playing.

“Everyone has been playing really well up and down the lineup. I hope we keep it up,” Hogan said. “If we continue to work hard it will hopefully take us really far.”

Freshman Erin Woods continued her solid first-year campaign belting her team-high fourth home run. Hogan added two hits and Raven Coberg and Jane Wagner contributed one hit apiece.
