Fraternity to host pancake breakfast in support of member
April 25, 1996
Members of the FarmHouse fraternity will be flippin’ flap jacks this Sunday in support of Matt Wiebers who recently beat his cancer.
The pancake breakfast is a fund raiser open to the Ames community to help Wiebers’ family with their medical bills, said Ryan Mattison, FarmHouse member and a senior in electrical engineering and pre-med.
“We really encourage and hope everyone from campus and Ames can come,” Mattison said.
The breakfast will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the FarmHouse fraternity, 311 Ash Ave., and $4 will cover all you can eat, Mattison said.
All the food was donated by local grocery stores and all the proceeds will go to Matt and his family, he said.
Wiebers, a sophomore in agricultural systems technology, was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 1996. Following chemotherapy and surgery, doctors said he was cancer free this spring, Mattison said.
“We would just like to help put a dent in those costs,” he said.
Serving hot cakes is only one project to help Wiebers. The fraternity members have demonstrated what it means to be brothers by shaving their heads and running in the eight-hour run sponsored by the American Cancer Society in February.
Mattison said there were about 25 guys who all had bald heads in the cold months of February. The FarmHouse Chapter also raised over $1,000 in the eight-hour run on Feb. 11.
“This has really been an eye-opening experience living with Matt and seeing him go through his treatment and how he handled this so well,” Mattison said.
