Iowa State golfer arrested on DWI charges
April 10, 1996
An Iowa State golfer was arrested Saturday, April 6, on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Corey J. Chambers, 20, 205 Dotson Drive, was stopped in ISU’s Lot 61 parking lot near the Towers residence halls by the officers of the Ames Police Department. He was later released on a citation.
Dale Anderson, head coach of the ISU golf team, said Chambers notified him of the incident Tuesday.
“We were on a golf trip when this happened, and I found out about it when I got home,” Anderson said. “Corey came over to my house and talked to me about it.”
According to Anderson, Chambers said he was on his way home from Barnabee’s, 316 S. Duff Ave., when he was stopped by police. After failing a breathalyzer test given by police officials, he spent the night in jail.
Anderson said Chambers will not be suspended from the golf team but will be referred to a counselor.
“He’s going to have some sessions relative to alcohol abuse that will be handled internally by the athletic department,” he said.
Chambers is the first player Anderson said he has coached who has been in trouble with law enforcement officials.
“Corey has never been in trouble at home or in Ames. He assured me that this was a one-time incident,” Anderson said. “He’s a straightforward individual. He promised me this will never happen again.”
Chambers could not be reached for comment.
