Cyclone women keep streak alive
December 5, 1995
The Iowa State women’s basketball team kept its perfect streak intact with a pair of wins at the Borden’s Lobo Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., over the weekend.
Against Texas-San Antonio in the first game, the Cyclones extended an eight-point halftime lead into a 82-54 stomping of the Lady Roadrunners. Iowa State had problems shooting the ball in the first half, hitting only 12 of 36 shots, but exploded in the second half for 51 points on 54 percent shooting.
The Cyclones used a patient ball control tempo to put away the hosting New Mexico Lobos in the championship game, 59-48. Iowa State raced out to a 17-3 run at the end of the first half to take a commanding 30-18 advantage into the locker room.
Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said even though his team had a double digit lead at halftime, he was still not entirely comfortable.
“When you go on the road you never know what can happen,” Fennelly said. “Once we got out to a big lead, we tried to slow the tempo of the game down.”
Jayme Olson, a sophomore center from Bettendorf, had 24 points and fellow sophomore Janel Grimm put in 14 for the Cyclones in the championship game. Olson was named MVP of the tournament.
“Jayme played like the dominating player that she can be,” Fennelly said.
Another player who drew praise from Fennelly was junior guard Kim Martin. Martin grabbed 13 rebounds in the championship to go along with four steals. She also had seven rebounds against Texas-San Antonio.
Fennelly said these two wins are especially important to the Cyclones because after the Northern Iowa game this Wednesday, they play nine consecutive games on the road.
“It was great to go on the road and win some games,” Fennelly said. “Hopefully, this will be something we can build on.”
The thing that led the Cyclones in both victories was balanced team scoring. Three players scored in double figures in both games.
“We don’t have a team that can just go out and rely on one player to carry us to a victory,” Fennelly said. “We have relied on the contributions of many different players to get us to where we are.”
