University policy
December 4, 1995
To the Editor:
Contrary to the statement in the Nov. 29 Iowa State Daily editorial concerning “Dead Week,” there is no university policy that “states that instructors are not allowed to assign coursework that falls due during the week prior to final exams.”
The university’s policy governing the week before final exams is presented on page 46 of the 1995-96 General Catalog.
It states: “The last week of classes has been designated Dead Week by the Government of the Student Body. The intent is to provide students with time for review and preparation for final examinations.
Therefore, no activities sponsored by student organizations under the jurisdiction of GSB may be held during that week. For academic programs, however, the last week of classes is considered to be a normal week in the semester.” (emphasis added).
This means that instructors are expected to treat that week the same as any other week and may therefore make normal assignments that are due that week.
