Swimmers win on the road

The Iowa State men’s swim team came away from Saturday night’s meet at St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn., victorious. The Cyclones beat the Oles in their home waters, 118-97, improving their record to 4-0.

Although the Cyclones swam well, Head Coach Trip Hedrick downplayed the importance of the meet. He said the stress is being put on this week’s meet against intrastate rival, the University of Iowa. The Cyclones battle the Hawks on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in Beyer Hall.

Hedrick said the St. Olaf meet was rather low key. The Oles have been on the Cyclone schedule for 15 years now and has become somewhat of a tradition. Hedrick said he likes to use this meet to let the more inexperienced swimmers get a chance to compete and also to let people swim some events they normally wouldn’t swim in a highly competitive meet.

“Our main focus was to give experience to some of our guys that don’t swim much in the big meets,” Hedrick said.

The Cyclones came away with several golds placing first in eight of the 11 events. Iowa State had two swimmers place first in two events.

Brian Roska won both the 500-free and the 1,000-free with times of 4:52.55 and 10.00.92, respectively. Roska also swam on the third place 200-free relay.

In spite of the high placing, Roska was not happy with his early season performance.

“It wasn’t as fast as I’d like,” he said.

Junior Lea Bonebrake placed first in the 50-free in 22.06 seconds and the 100-backstroke in 54.64.

Other champions for the evening included Mike Brown in the 100-free, Jason Johnson in the 100-butterfly, and John Ruzicka in the 200-IM.

Ruzicka didn’t swim his usual events which are the 50 and 100-free.

About his race he said,”I guess I was happy with it for the amount of training we’re doing right now.”

Ruzicka said he feels confident about the performance of the team as a whole.

“We’re looking really good right now,” he said.

Hedrick was also pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was a nice group effort,” Hedrick said.
