Nurre named Big Eight Wrestler of the Week
Iowa State co-captain Jason Nurre received the Big Eight Wrestler-of-the-Week award after his performance over the weekend at the Las Vegas Invitational. The senior from Dyersville captured the 118-pound title, helping the Cyclones claim the team title.
Nurre’s victims included No. 2-ranked Sheldon Thomas of Clarion, No. 10-ranked Shawn Conyers of Ohio State and No. 18-ranked Tim Derland of Purdue, whom he decisioned, 3-0, in the final. Nurre entered the tournament as the eighth seed.
Baseball team inks area preps
Iowa State baseball coach Lyle Smith announced the signing of two area preps to national letters of intent Tuesday. Nate Hilton and Jon Ross are the first recruits to sign since Smith took over as head coach.
Hilton, a native of Boone, recorded a 6-0 record with one save and a 1.19 ERA as a junior to earn him all-district, as well as honorable mention all-state honors.
Ross, a Johnston native, compiled a 4-2 record with two saves as a junior and received first-team all-conference and all-district honors. At the plate, he batted .470 with 13 doubles and 24 RBIs. He had a 6-0 record with seven saves as a sophomore.
