KUSR to stay off air until next semester

Officials at Iowa State’s student-run radio station, KUSR, are not expecting to be back on the air until next semester.

The station was shut down by the Federal Communication Commission earlier this month for broadcasting at the wrong wattage and wrong frequency.

KUSR’s assistant general manager, Erich Grubert, said, “We wish we could start back up next week.” The station went off the air Nov. 1.

KUSR must apply for a new license, which requires extensive paperwork by a professional consultant. Grubert said before the station can apply for its new license, it must raise money for the consultant. A consultant can cost up to $6,000, he said.

“We have to figure out where we are going to get the funding,” Grubert said. He said KUSR officials have initiated discussions with the residence hall associations, Warren Madden, ISU’s vice president for business and finance, and other university organizations to find funding.

“It’s very preliminary at this point,” he said.

After the station hires a consultant, it will take three weeks to finish the paperwork and about another three weeks for the FCC to issue a new license, Grubert said.

“We are focusing on getting back on the air. But it takes time coordinating this,” Grubert said.

KUSR has been broadcasting at 200 watts at 91.5 FM, while the FCC says it is licensed at 17 watts at 91.9 FM.
