Iowa State has enough to win against Huskers

April Samp

Is everyone as tired of this weather as I am?

Constant rain is driving me nuts and making my battle with the evil virus infesting my body that much more difficult.

I can’t believe it even snowed on Monday.

This weather is making me really think.

First I’m depressed because now I have no excuse to not do my homework.

Then I think about the big game with Nebraska on Saturday, and I’ve come up with a few predictions about the big battle.

Right now we’re making a sacrifice.

We, as Cyclone fans, are sacrificing a week’s worth of good weather to the Football gods.

We’re trying to sacrifice as much as we can to make the trip to Huskerland that much more bearable for our team.

But who needs them? When it comes to the Big Eight, the football gods kind of overlook Iowa State.

But who picks up on the talents of this team in the midst of a historic turnaround in national collegiate football history?

Why Sports Illustrated, of course. Troy Davis was named athlete of the week by SI.

Gods? We don’t need no gods. We don’t need no stinking gods.

Even without the help of the gods of the Gridiron, we’ve got enough to give us hope for a win in Lincoln.

Forget the 40 point spread and Nebraska is the No. 1 team in the country.

Forget about Tommy Frazier, a front runner in the race for the Heisman Trophy right alongside our own T.D.

Forget about the return of Lawrence Phillips after his bout with the law and his ex-girlfriend. Nebraska doesn’t need him. They were averaging 427 yards per game rushing without him.

Forget that ISU has only won four times out of 36 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

We need to remember what strengths we have.

We’ve got Dan McCarney, who is the power behind the turnaround of our football team.

His “work hard, get far” attitude is just what Iowa State football needed.

We’ve got Troy Davis. He’s only a sophomore, and he is topping a lot of offensive lists.

In the Big Eight he leads in rushing and if you’ve been hiding in the corner all season, he is the leading rusher in the country.

We’ve also got Ed Williams, who is fourth in the conference in overall receiving and is second in receiving yards per game.

Nebraska quarterbacks have yet to be sacked this season. A Cyclone defense led by Angelo Provenza, may be the first to drag down Frazier himself.

The ISU lineup is stocked full with Nebraskans including Todd Doxzon, Mike Horacek, Kevin Fleecs, Marc Harris and Michael Cooper, all of Omaha and all of them are returning home to show their family members what they’re made of.

The last time Nebraska was beaten was Nov. 14, 1992. It was a snowy day in Ames, and the goal posts went down in a 19-10 victory that stunned the Huskers into winning mode.

It’s time we shock ’em again, and we can do it.

If you’re not going to make the trip to Huskerland, I invite all of you to the Physical Education Building on behalf of the Iowa State women’s volleyball team.

Come out and watch the Cyclones, who are second in the conference behind No. 1 Nebraska, dismantle Hofstra of New York and Western Illinois.

The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
