ISU student threatened to kill party goer, officials say
November 7, 1995
A 19-year-old Iowa State student, arrested Sunday for making threats with a knife at a residence hall floor party Saturday night, allegedly threatened to kill a party goer.
According to ISU Department of Public Safety records, Mark A. Riley got into a confrontation with another man attending the floor party, co-sponsored by McRae House and Fuller House in Knapp Hall.
“Riley then went into his room and got a knife and said to the people in the room that he was going to kill the individual,” said Rob Bowers, a DPS captain.
The people in the room reportedly were able to calm Riley down and, he handed the knife over. Later that night Riley was apparently again angered and got a utility knife from his room and threatened individuals in the room.
He allegedly said he would kill them if they “touched him.” After he calmed down, he put the knife down and no one was injured, Bowers said.
Towers Residence Hall security officials reported the incident to DPS and an arrest warrant was obtained from District Associative Court.
“There is a constitutional right not to be arrested out of your home except in limited circumstances or with a warrant,” Bowers said, explaining why DPS officials waited until Sunday to arrest Riley.
Riley, who lives at 4212 Knapp Hall, is a freshman in English. He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, an aggravated misdemeanor and going armed with intent, a Class D felony. The arrest was made at about 10 a.m. Sunday.
Riley is being held on a $15,000 bond at the Story County Jail. If found guilty, Riley faces up to two years in a jail and a $5,000 fine on the aggravated misdemeanor charge.
He faces up to five years in jail and a $7,500 fine for the Class D felony.
The incident remains under investigation.
