Local organizers say “Students and Staff Against AIDS” will be the theme of Iowa State’s World AIDS Day activities Dec. 1.

“It is the responsibility of every individual to play a part in the fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS,” said Kay-Lynne Willoughby, residence hall coordinator and a World AIDS Day organizer. “The goals of shared responsibility and urging individuals into action are continuous ones that extend throughout the year.”

To achieve the “shared responsibility” goal, education is the main issue that needs to be addressed, Willoughby said.

A variety of events aimed at “informing and educating” about AIDS will be sponsored by the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center, the YWCA and several fraternity houses.

There will be booths in each of the residence halls and a display in Parks Library that will have AIDS information available and will emphasize the importance of safe sex education.

Organizers are still looking for volunteers. Anyone who donates 35 to 40 minutes of time will receive a free T-shirt. To offer sponsorship or to volunteer, contact Willoughby at 294-1697, Jan Webb at 294-2093 or Janea Johnson at 294-5209.
