Pianist George Winston will be soloing in the Des Moines Civic Center tonight. He will be playing both recorded and unrecorded selections, as well as a host of seasonal melodies.

“George Winston: A Solo Piano Concert” will feature Blues, Rock, R&B and stride piano selections.

Winston will show off his guitar ability as well. Described as “Hawaiian slack key,” this finger picked guitar style is one Winston has studied and recorded for many years, according to a press release. Winston will perform Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, a story of a Hiroshima survivor’s transformation from a young girl into a heroine of peace. The award-winning story will be narrated by Liv Ullmann.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring along a donation of non-perishable food which will be given by Winston to the Food Bank of Iowa, said Brenda Mickle, publicity and public relations director for the Civic Center.

The performance begins tonight at 7:30 p.m. There are seats still available according to Mickle.

Tickets are $14.75 and $17.75 and are available at the Civic Center box office and at all Ticketmaster locations.
