GSB resolution calls for a revision of athletic allocations

The Government of the Student Body is expected to vote tonight on a resolution that calls for a revision of student fee allocations that help fund intercollegiate athletics.

The bill is sponsored by GSB President Dan Mangan, GSB finance director Steve Elliot and eight senators.

The Special Student Fee Committee proposed last spring to reserve a $10 increase in student fees for funding of intercollegiate athletics.

The increase is scheduled to begin during the 1996 fall semester at $5 per student. Another $5 increase would be implemented during the 1997 fall semester.

If the committee follows through with the plan, students will be contributing $19.75 per semester to the athletic department.

However, the resolution says a 3.5 percent tuition increase this year, the smallest in 14 years, would fail to meet the funding need of organizations by the fall of 1997. Student fees are increased at the same percentage as tuition. Special Student Fee Committee members had anticipated a larger increase.

“We are going to honor our commitment to help the athletic department, but we’ll do it on our terms,” Mangan said.

If the resolution is passed, the first $5 increase will go into effect as planned. However, the second increase would be postponed indefinitely.

Mangan said he feels the resolution is reasonable. He said it should pass because it gives students flexibility to phase-in the additional $5.

“They [athletic department officials] want $5, but I think whether they get it in one year or two doesn’t make a tremendous impact,” he said. “We do intend to give them $5, but we’ll do it when we think its appropriate.”

The resolution also states that the Special Student Fee Committee would monitor the athletic department’s five-year plan so a reduction in the budget’s line-item could be made if the athletic department’s financial situation improves.

Today’s meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
