A rural Ames man was arrested Nov. 17 after he allegedly rented a barn on his property to Iowa State students for an underage beer party in late October.

Jack J. Baker, 47, was arrested on charges of bootlegging and furnishing alcohol to persons under the legal age. On Oct. 28 Baker allegedly rented his barn to ISU students who sold tickets for admittance and provided transportation to and from the party. Unlimited beer was provided at the party for a flat fee.

According to officials, as part of the arrangement, Baker arranged for school buses and charged the student organizers a lump sum for each person who attended the party.

The arrest is a result of a joint investigation by members of the Story County Sheriff’s Office, ISU Department of Public Safety, Ames Police, Story County Sheriff’s Reserve and the Story County Attorney’s Office. Undercover officers purchased tickets, attended the party and observed numerous violations of the law. A total of 29 kegs were seized at the party. Four ISU students were arrested on a charge of bootlegging and several students were cited for underage possession of alcohol.

Baker was released on his own recognizance Nov. 17.
