Focus on real problem
November 3, 1995
To the Editor:
I am writing in response to the editorial entitled: “Ball teams supporting racism.”
First, let me go on record as saying that these mascots are offensive to some people, and can be seen as racist. But we shouldn’t go on a crusade to stamp out all racism in every nook and cranny of the sports world until we’ve solved the real problem of racism in America.
The real problem is the unequal treatment of people based simply on the color of their skin or ethnic background. Every day, someone in this country will be a victim of racism whatever his (or her) skin color might be.
Let’s focus on solving the real problem. Let’s work to gain equality for everyone instead of sitting around blaming sports teams and their mascots for all the racism in America.
