ISU women win exhibition game

It wasn’t pretty at times, but then again, preseason games rarely resemble poetry in motion.

What it turned into was a 100-67 exhibition game rout by the Iowa State women’s basketball team over the Dream Builders basketball team. The Dream Builders were made up of former area women’s basketball stars.

“A win is a win,” said sophomore forward Jayme Olson. “Everyone had fun out there.”

Olson led the Cyclones with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The teams took turns trading the lead in the early minutes of the game, before Tara Gunderson stole an errant Dream Builder pass at the the top of ISU’s key and fed it into Olson for a layup and a 13-9 Cyclone lead.

Kim Martin sank a perimeter jumper to pull the Cyclones to a 17-11 advantage with just over 15 minutes remaining in the half. The only thing that kept the Dream Builders in the game at that point was former Iowa State star Tanetta Rasheed. Rasheed, who finished her career with the Cyclones in 1992, scored seven of her team’s first eleven points.

Iowa State increased its lead to 32-22, using a 12-4 run that was capped off by forward Janel Grimm’s three-point basket with 3:41 to go in the half. The Cyclones took a 38-31 advantage into the locker room.

ISU shot only 39% from the floor in the first half, but had 11 steals to the opponent’s four.

“The team played really hard, they were just slightly nervous, and experienced a little bit of first game jitters,” said Cyclone head coach Bill Fennelly. “It was fun for the team to finally be able to just go out and play.”

If the 310 fans who attended the exhibition expected a competitive second half, they went away frustrated. Iowa State raced out to leads of 60-43 and 85-49 on their way to outscoring the opposing team by a score of 68-37.

ISU’s collapsing defense forced the Dream Builders into 44% shooting in the second half, as the ISU women’s team broke the 100- point mark for the first time since the 1975-76 season.

Becky Jushka sank a free-throw with 9.2 seconds remaining in the game to put the Cyclones over the century mark at 100-64. Rasheed closed out the scoring with a three-pointer to give her 21 points for the game.
