No. 20 Iowa State set for heavyweight matchup versus No. 11 Texas
January 11, 2019
Both standing 3-0 in the Big 12, No. 20 Iowa State will face No. 11 Texas on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
Texas sits at 13-2 this season with its only losses coming from a 67-49 loss to No. 7 Mississippi State and an 88-82 loss to No. 13 Tennessee.
Despite finishing last season 14-17, Iowa State only fell to then-No. 6 Texas 72-59.
“I thought we played [Texas] decently last year, clearly we didn’t have our best season, but that’s why we are super excited this year,” Wise said. “We know we are a lot better, we know what we are capable of.”
In Iowa State’s last game, the Cyclone’s defeated TCU 92-54 behind Bridget Carleton’s 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
In Texas’ last game, the Longhorns beat Oklahoma 73-63.
Texas was able to secure 18 offensive rebounds which helped propel the Longhorns to victory. Fennelly said Texas’ roster has the size and length which could rival Iowa State’s men’s basketball team.
The Longhorns leaders on the boards are 6’3 Joyner Holmes, 6’4 Jatarie White and 6’5 Charlie Collier.
“I think they rebound like 47, 48 percent of their misses which is an insane number, so their size is always an issue,” Fennelly said.
Despite Texas’ size and rebounding ability, Fennelly said Iowa State will stay with a lineup made up of four guards and one post player most of the time, but has practiced a lineup with two post players.
If Iowa State does roll out two posts, expect one of them to be Kristin Scott. With Scott, Fennelly said she is able maintain spacing due to her 3-point shooting ability.
In the past several games, Scott has been one of Iowa State’s top scorers coming off the bench and has also been extremely efficient. Against TCU, Scott registered 12 points (5-of-5 shooting) and six rebounds.
When rebounding, Fennelly said the team will need its guards to rebound more than ever.
“It’s not just going to be our four and five against their four and five,” Fennelly said. “If that’s the case, it’s going to be a long night.”
When there is only one post on the floor, which will be the majority of the time, Carleton said the guards need to make it a priority to focus on every possession.
Wise said the guards need to specifically emphasize boxing out during the game to negate Texas’ ability to crash the boards.
Texas won the last three games at Hilton, but Fennelly doesn’t expect Iowa State to surprise the Longhorns.
Iowa State’s average margin of victory through three games in the Big 12 is 28.3 points.
Carleton said being ranked in the top 20 has given the Cyclones the confidence that they feel they can compete with any team in the country including Texas.
While Iowa State has confidence entering the game versus Texas, Fennelly said if Iowa State has any deficiencies in their game, it is going to be exposed versus a team of the caliber of the Longhorns.
