The Iowa State Cyclone men’s golf team used a steady team performance to take third place in the team standings at the Butler University Fall Golf Classic in Peoria, Ill. on Oct. 8-9.

The 54-hole tournament featured 15 teams over the two day tournament, in which ISU totaled 908 strokes.

“We are still not where we want to be at,” said ISU men’s head golf coach Dale Anderson.

“We seem to have a comfort zone right about 75, but we need to be closer to 74 or 73 for an average. We have to try to average 295 to win the tournament. We had a shaky middle round.”

Junior Travis Korver lead the Cyclone squad with his eighth place finish in the individual standings. Korver finished with round scores of 76-73-75 (224).

“Travis is playing consistently good,” Anderson said. “But he is not quite where he wants to be at yet.”

Sophomores Jason Knutzon and Jon Brackmann were next in line for ISU.

Knutzon and Brackmann each shot final cards of 227 strokes. Knutzon shot rounds of 73-79-75 (227) while Brackmann shot rounds of 77-75-75 (227).

“Jason is also playing consistently good,” Anderson said.

The tournament was Brackmann’s first appearance this fall.

“Jon played in this tournament last year and shot all 80s,” Anderson said. “He is doing a really good job. He [Brackmann] went through some extensive qualifying. He played with a lot of pressure by trying to make the starting team.”

Sophomore Jon Levy completed the course with a 233 stroke total after shooting rounds of 75-81-77.

“Jon is right on the edge. He needs to be at 225, which is five or six strokes below where he is at,” Anderson said. “He is going to improve. He was a good high school player, and will be a real good college player.”

Junior Donnie Teeter rounded out the Cyclone squad while shooting rounds of 80-79-76 (235).

Missouri-Kansas City golfer Robert Russell shot rounds of 69-70-69 (208) to claim the medalist honors over Jason Nuss of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Nuss shot rounds of 71-72-70 (213) to finish five strokes back.

Winning the team title was Missouri-Kansas City. M-KC totaled 891 strokes en route to the title.

The Drake Bulldogs finished second in the team title chase. Ben Poehling lead the Bulldogs with rounds of 74-74-72 (220) en route to a third place finish.

The Bulldogs finished seven strokes behind M-KC in the tournament.

The University of Northern Iowa finished in 11th place in the tournament.

The Panthers were lead by Nathan Lubs. Lubs shot rounds of 75-77-77 (229).

The Cyclones will round out the fall slate when they go into action at the Red Raider Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Lubbock, Tex. Oct. 23-24.

“We are going to have some extensive qualifying for four roster spots,” Anderson said. “We would like to end the season on a positive note.”
