The AIDS Coalition of Story County is sponsoring the 1995 Fall Extravaganza Oct. 14 in conjunction with the Iowa State University Student Health Advisory Committee and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance.

The event will be held in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets cost $5 for students with an ID and $7 for the general public.

Raffles will be conducted throughout the evening. The grand prize is a hot air balloon ride for up to 10 people, provided by Otter Creek Ballooning of Indianola. Other prizes, all donated, include an autographed copy of Jane Smiley’s novel Moo, a hang gliding lesson and a steak dinner for two at Cafe Northwest.

Raffle tickets can be purchased for $1 in advance at Style Studio, Caffe Luc’s, Campus Book Store and the ACSC office. Tickets will also be available at the door for the same price.

A booth in the Union will have raffle tickets for sale on Thursday.

“You do not have to be present to win,” said Clay Gurganus, a volunteer with the AIDS Coalition.

A dance will begin at 9 p.m. and prizes will be given for the best costumes.

This is the third year for the event, said Pam Carnine, director of the ACSC.

Proceeds from the event go to AIDS prevention education, Carnine said. “It costs about $1,000 to put this thing on.”

Last year the extravaganza raised more than $2,000.

“It is crucial that we raise money for the coalition, but if it helps to enhance awareness and knowledge of what our organization does for the community, then it’s a worthwhile event,” Carnine said.

“Iowa State is involved throughout this coalition and this event. I don’t know what we would do without them.”
