Room for smoking
October 16, 1995
To the Editor:
I am writing this letter concerning the fate of the Trophy Tavern in the remodeling plans for the Memorial Union. I am a smoker who can remember the time when there was a smoking lounge in the lower level of Parks Library, smoking areas inside of various university buildings and when half of the commons was a smoking area.
For the rights of non-smokers, I can understand the reduction of smoking areas in the name of clean air. However, I do not believe that smoking areas should be abolished completely on this campus.
I admit that the current situation and location of the Trophy Tavern creates a smoke problem for those who use the vending machines in it, or for those who walk by or through the area.
All I ask is that some type of smoking area be maintained in the Union renovation plans. I believe an area could be made that would accommodate the large number of smokers who currently use the Tavern while creating a minimal annoyance to non-smokers; perhaps a well-ventilated, separate dining area. Perhaps with planning, both smokers and non-smokers will be able to call the newly renovated Union home.
