Soccer team rebounds from loss on Friday

The Iowa State women’s soccer team rebounded from a disappointing loss on Friday night by trouncing Kansas Newman, 2-0, at the Iowa State Soccer Field on Sunday.

Head Coach Cathy Klein cited her team’s increased aggressiveness as one of the keys to the turnaround from Friday night. This was reflected in number of shots on goal. ISU had eight shots on goal against Newman; a two-fold increase of the four they had in the 3-0 loss to Loyola of Chicago on Friday.

“Our team’s second effort was what won the game for us,” Klein said. “Everyone on the team contributed to this win.”

The Cyclones played a more opportunistic style of offense against Newman.

Freshman Jocelyn Nordstrom scored the first goal for the Cyclones with 21:15 left in the second half. Kelly Mearns received an assist for the goal.

Tawnya Miller then scored a security goal off a corner kick with 15:08 left in the match. The goal was the first one of the season for the junior from Sioux City.

Klein said she gave her team a talk after the Loyola loss.

“I told them to think about what it took to win,” she said. “I questioned them on their desire to do the things it took to win.”

The Cyclone women responded with a more physical style of play on Sunday. The Cyclones took the plays to the Newman women. This was a complete turnaround from the Loyola game, as the Cyclone women spent most of that match defending the ball on their side of the field.

Loyola recorded 10 shots on goal on Friday, while the Cyclone defenders held the Newman team to just 5 shots on goal.

Klein called Sunday’s match a “gut-check.”

“I am very proud of the team,” Klein said. “If we play the way we did (on Sunday) there is no one on our schedule who can beat us.”

The Cyclone women resume their schedule with a home match against Drake at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
