University community preparing for Homecoming

Homecoming will be here soon, giving Iowa State students and alumni a chance to “Capture the Excitement” of 1995.

Celebrations will begin this Sunday, Oct. 15, and run through the week.

“We wanted this year’s theme to reflect the changes and many new and exciting things going on at Iowa State,” said Kyle DeVries, Homecoming marketing co-coordinator.

ISU’s new logo, the renovation of Lake LaVerne, as well as new basketball and football coaches, prompted this year’s theme, DeVries said.

“One of our goals is that we are looking for more participation, and more alumni to get back for Homecoming,” DeVries said.

“We wanted to be more successful than past years and involve more areas of the university, not just the greek system,” added Jeff Siems, Homecoming co-chair. “We are really trying to get more residence halls included, and it’s working pretty good this year.”

Painting of “Victory Lane” will happen Oct. 15, from 1-6 p.m., directly north of the Olsen building. Traditional tournaments will permeate the week with competitions ranging from mud volleyball to bowling.

Underage students will have a chance to enter Campustown bars Oct. 18 to listen to bands and take in the atmosphere during “Night-On-The-Town.”

Events will include a performance by hypnotist Steve Meade. He will perform in the Memorial Union’s Great Hall Friday, Oct. 20 from 9-11 p.m.

The torch runners will also return on Friday. There will be a pep rally and carriage rides that evening as well.

The Homecoming king and queen will be presented at the pep rally, which starts at 7 p.m. on central campus. The night’s festivities will finish with mass campaniling at midnight followed by Yell-Like-Hell.

Kickoff for the Homecoming game versus Colorado will be at noon on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Homecoming schedules are available at McDonald’s and will be included with pizza orders from Pizza Pit and Home Team Pizza.

Information on any Homecoming activities is available at the Homecoming office in 158 Memorial Union, or by phone at 294-0198.
