ISU men’s golf team takes third in Illinois
October 3, 1995
Sophomore Cyclone golfer Jason Knutzon powered the Iowa State men’s golf team to a third place finish in the team title standings at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate Invitational tournament in Normal, Ill. on Sunday.
Drake claimed the team title by 12 strokes over Illinois St. It was a 17-team tournament.
The Bulldogs were lead by individual medalist Ben Poehling, who shot a two over par 215 (73-71-71) to win the tournament by four strokes over Ball State golfer Jason Compton.
The Cyclones finished the tournament with 904 strokes to finish in a tie for third place.
“We haven’t gotten on track yet,” Head Coach Dale Anderson said. “We just haven’t gotten a handle on it yet.”
Knutzon, who finished third in the individual standings, shot rounds of 73-76-71 (220).
“Jason played beautifully this tournament,” Anderson said. “On the final round, he hit 17 of 18 greens. That is some excellent ball-striking.”
Junior Travis Korver was second on the Cyclone squad with 224 strokes. Korver finished in a tie for 10th.
“Travis never really got on track,” Anderson said.
Junior Donnie Teeter and sophomore Jon Levy tied in the individual standings at 33rd — each accumulated 230 strokes.
“Levy continues to improve,” Anderson said. “He is getting better; it is really encouraging.”
Senior Dale McCarty rounded out the final spot on the Cyclone squad with 236 strokes. McCarty finished in a tie for 59th.
Levy and McCarty were each playing in their first tournament of the fall.
“It is a transition from qualifying to playing in a tournament,” Anderson said. “They view it as more of a move that what it really is. Maybe it is the pressure, but they need to accept a bad shot and stay in control.”
“Third place is a pretty good performance,” he said. “We beat some really good teams, such as Ball State, Michigan State and Arkansas State.”
Fellow Big Eight competitor Kansas State finished seventh in the team title standings. Leading the Wildcats was Troy Halterman, who tied with Korver at 224 strokes.
The University of Northern Iowa also participated in the tournament. The Panthers finished 17th in the team standings with 960 strokes.
The Cyclones will next be in action Oct. 9-10 at the Bradley Fall Golf Classic in Peoria, Ill.
“Korver and Knutzon are going. We will decide the rest later today [Tuesday],” Anderson said. “But right now I am unsure of our lineup.”
“We need to shoot 295 strokes to be a first division team,” he said. “We are just not there yet.”
