Retired journalism professor dies at 75

Retired Iowa State professor, Dale E. Boyd, died of a heart attack at Mary Greeley Medical Center Tuesday. He was 75.

Boyd was Department of Journalism Chairwoman Jane Peterson’s adviser while she worked on her master’s degree.

“He had a lot to do with what people did in life and he had a lot to do with me,” Peterson said. “He was a wonderful man and inspiring adviser.”

As well as teaching at ISU, Boyd served as faculty representative on the Iowa State Daily Publications Board and was the journalism extension coordinator.

Boyd’s long career in academics and journalism began after he graduated from the University of Iowa in 1942 with a degree in journalism. He severed as an officer in the U.S. Army until 1945. His service included combat action in Europe during D-Day and in North Africa. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.

He worked as editor and publisher of the Pocahontas Record Democrat from 1945 to 1968.

Boyd received a master’s degree in agriculture journalism from ISU in 1970 and a doctorate degree in education in 1976. He worked as an ISU instructor until 1972 and served as business adviser to student publications from 1970 to 1974, including the Iowa State Daily. He retired as a professor emeritus in 1982.

He was a member of the Iowa Press Association, the Iowa Daily Press Association, the Institute of Newspaper Controllers and Finance Officers, the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors, the Association for the Education in Journalism and the Society of Professional Journalists.

He was also a member of the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames and was a past active member of the Rotary International and the American Legion. Boyd was also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honorary society.

Boyd was married to Ardis Kepler. He had two sons, Capt. John S. Boyd, and Tom L. Boyd. Funeral services were held yesterday in Pocahontas.
