The 3M Foundation of Ames has presented Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa with a $30,000 grant.

The money will be used for an addition to Goodwill’s main center, 4900 NE 22nd Street in Des Moines.

3M was approached by Goodwill for the grant. “They asked for $75,000,” said Bob Sirek, 3M’s human resource administrator.

Goodwill provides training and work experience for unemployed individuals. With the new addition, Goodwill plans to expand training to include those on welfare, the homeless and at-risk people.

“Currently we are able to train about 400 individuals in a given year,” said Marlyn McKeen, president of Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa. The new addition will allow training for 100 more people.

In addition to expansion of the work training area, two classrooms and a day care center will be added.

“The classrooms will primarily be used for vocational education,” McKeen said. “They will also be used for night classes such as data entry or accounting.”

The day care center is new to Goodwill. McKeen said it will provide parents with more flexibility to attend classes. Day care will be free for those participating in training.

“There have been several Ames residents who participated in training programs in Des Moines,” McKeen said.

Ames is also the site of a Goodwill Clothing Store.

Construction is expected to be completed sometime in February.
