Cyclones club Sooners

The Iowa State women’s volleyball team clubbed the visiting Oklahoma Sooners in four games on Saturday, bringing their record to 14-7 overall and 5-1 in the Big Eight, which is good for second place in the conference.

Jen Lansink had a record-breaking performance as setter with 72 assists as four Cyclone hitters posted double-doubles statistically in kills and digs. The junior broke the four game match record of 60 for ISU set by Kary Law in 1994.

“I felt really good about how I played. I’ve never doubted that I could do it,” Lansink said. “We’re right on track as a team at achieving our goal of the NCAA’s. Every match, every point — we’re right on track.”

Head Coach Jackie Nunez was pleased with the way Lansink directed the offense.

“I thought Jen Lansink set one of the best matches I’ve seen so far this year. She had a large part to do with the win,” Nunez said. “Jen was hanging up beautiful sets and delivering the ball real consistently.”

Steph McCannon, a senior outside hitter and team co-captain, led ISU offensively and defensively on the night. McCannon notched 19 kills and 30 digs. Nationally, McCannon is fourth in individual digs with a 4.67 average and sits atop the Big Eight’s list.

“We were very intense in the first game and we kind of let down in the third, but we came back and got a good win,” McCannon said.

McCannon’s lead was followed closely by fellow senior Dana Mucha, a middle hitter who tallied 18 kills and 13 digs. Juniors Rachelle Frese and Sonya Van Helden rounded out the list for double-doubles.

As a team, the Cyclones are 12th in the nation in digs with a 19.10 per game average and received 12 votes for the AVCA/USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

The Cyclone netters came out with intensity and the scrappiness characteristic of ISU at the beginning of the match, but had trouble gaining momentum to score. ISU never let up, however, and began to pull away with a slight lead over the Sooners that transpired to a 15-9 first game win.

After capturing a 1-0 lead, the Cyclones’ game started to click making the Sooners future hopes for a game win look bleak. ISU rolled to a 15-6 victory sealed with a kill by right-side hitter Sonya Van Helden.

In the third game ISU suffered a lapse in intensity and execution, according to Nunez, and allowed Oklahoma a game win, 15-11.

“We just couldn’t put the ball away. We kept making errors. They started playing better and we just couldn’t terminate in areas of our game that we had been in the first two games,” Nunez said.

Iowa State was down 2-11 at one point in the third game, when freshman Staci Smith came in and proved she was the fire behind a Cyclone comeback. With help from two Dana Mucha service aces and the rest of her team, the score was knotted at 11-11.

Any hopes for a three game sweep for ISU disappeared, however, after Oklahoma tallied four straight points and claimed game three.

The cardinal and gold regrouped and charged to a turnaround 15-11 match win in game four. Nunez was happy with her team’s play and with the win over the Big Eight squad, but she saw some room for improvement.

“I’m real pleased. It’s a great win. Oklahoma is a very good team. We were very intense — certainly in games one, two and four — very poised and we just played hard,” she said.

“Every match we win, we move closer and closer to clenching second place in the Big Eight, but we need to be able to sustain our intensity for the duration of a match. We can’t have a lapse like we did tonight in future games.”

Iowa State next takes on the Wildcats of Kansas State on Wednesday, Oct. 25. ISU previously defeated the ranked rival in five games in Manhattan.
