College rodeo to be held this weekend

Round ’em up, and come on out.

The Iowa State Rodeo Club will be hosting the Cyclone Stampede College Rodeo Oct. 6-7.

Janelle Mahr, club secretary, said the two-day attraction will include bare-back riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping and bull racing.

Since this is the only chance for ISU students to see the club compete this year, “I’d like to have a lot of support,” said Terry Jones, rodeo chairman.

The rodeo, which is funded chiefly by GSB, is intended to appeal to all audiences, and will include several unique events, Jones said. College students will have a chance to participate in a calf-dressing contest, where teams will attempt to rope and dress a calf in clothes.

Children will be able to participate in the calf scramble, where youngsters pull stickers off calves, Jones said. Another contest for kids includes the “mutton-busting challenge,” or sheep riding.

The Miss Iowa State Rodeo Contest will be held Saturday evening at the rodeo.

The rodeo begins at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Beef Production Farm on South State Street. Events continue Saturday with the matinee beginning at 1 p.m. The evening performance starts at 7 p.m.

The rodeo will include colleges in the Great Plains region, with teams from North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. All tickets will be sold at the gate. Prices are $4.50 for adults, $3.50 for students and $3 for children under 15.
