Increasing campus safety

The Department of Public Safety and the Government of the Student Body’s joint venture to beef up campus safety is a step in the right direction.

DPS and GSB announced last week that they will be teaming up to fund an escort service on campus. DPS will contribute $25,000 to the project. GSB will pump in $4,000.

“We’re trying to make the issue of escorting as easy as we possibly can,” said Loras Jaeger, DPS director. “Any successful university must have certain things in place to make students feel at ease.”

In an age when sexual assaults on college campuses are on the rise, an absence of a well-funded escort service here at Iowa State has not bode well for the university. This will help.

Granted the purchase of a six-passenger golf cart by the GSB may not seem the most appropriate use of funds, but if campus safety benefits, a few thousand dollars for a golf scooter could be a wise investment.

The university and GSB also appear to be willing to recognize other areas that could help make the ISU campus safer. Students and staff wishing to access the the escort service can call 294-4444.
