Student input ignored

The Memorial Union Board of Directors should consider student input regarding a smoking ban in the Union’s Trophy Tavern.

At a Memorial Union Board of Directors meeting on Sept. 28, in what appeared to be a quick decision, the board decided to ban smoking in the Union room. The Trophy Tavern and the Maintenance Shop are the only places on campus that currently allow smoking.

The issue was not on the meeting agenda, but was decided in closing remarks. The decision was also made with little student input since students constitute only one-third of board membership.

Because of the circumstances on which the ban was decided, the Government of the Student Body passed an emergency resolution last week, asking the board to reconsider its decision. In light of the resolution, the board should reconsider the ban, taking students’ opinion into account.

Students’ input concerning the future of the Union’s Browsing Library and Chapel has been sought and valued. Changes in the Trophy Tavern should be handled in a similar manner.
