Farrakhan’s no King
October 24, 1995
To the Editor:
The “Million Man March” on Washington last week is to be applauded as a symbol of unification for the African American male.
However, the organizers, including Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan have completely shot their credibility as human rights advocates. While putting together a day address racism, they have furthered gender discrimination. Farrakhan asked that women not attend the march. It seems ridiculous and self-serving for the organizers to tell black women to “stay home and teach the children.”
How convenient for black male leaders to pick and choose which forms of discrimination are acceptable and which are not. Louis Farrakhan and his cohorts should not be uttered in the same breath as M.L. King.
