The Iowa State men’s golf team wrapped up its fall season schedule with a fourth place finish at the Red Raider Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Lubbock, Texas on Oct. 23 and 24.

The 11 team tournament was 54 holes in length.

The Cyclones completed the team portion of the tournament with 892 strokes, 14 strokes behind team champion New Mexico State.

“I was pleased with our performance,” Head Coach Dale Anderson said. “Everyone that went to the tournament contributed.”

Anderson said the weather conditions were a factor for the final 18 holes.

“The wind was strong and the pin placement was difficult. We just didn’t have enough maturity to win the tournament but I am pleased with the results,” Anderson said.

“We finally broke through our goal of shooting a 74 stroke average,” Anderson said.

ISU was lead by junior golfer Travis Korver. Korver carded a final total of 219 strokes to finish in fifth place.

“Travis played extremely well,” Anderson said.

Senior Chris Peterson, participating in his second tournament of the season, tied for 15th with a final stroke total of 223.

Junior Donnie Teeter was the third Cyclone golfer to participate in the tournament. Teeter totaled 225 strokes to finish in a tie for 22nd place.

Senior golfer J.D. Grimm also participated in the tournament. Grimm had a final total of 230 strokes to finish in a tie for 36th place. It was Grimm’s first tournament of the fall.

“J.D. made it through qualifying and had a good performance,” Anderson said. “He is a fifth-year senior, hopefully he can assert himself this spring and play well.”

Sophomore Jon Levy rounded out the Cyclone squad in a tie for 48th place and a final card of 235 strokes.

“The team was very strong,” Anderson said.

New Mexico St. won the team portion of the tournament. The Aggies claimed the finish by three strokes over Texas Tech with a final total of 878 strokes. The Aggies were lead by golfer Ryan Jansa. Jansa claimed second place in the individual aspect of the tournament with 216 strokes.

Future Big 12 competitor Texas Tech grabbed one honor while hosting the tournament. Red Raider golfer Chris Mathis posted a final card of 213 to take the top honors.

Big Eight competitor Nebraska also participated in the tournament. The Cornhuskers tied for sixth place in the team title chase.

Anderson said the team will begin winter training in about a month. The training will consist of weights and running, along with indoor hitting.

The Cyclones will begin the spring schedule when they participate in the Embry Riddle-Palm Coast Invitational in Palm Coast, Fla., March 15-17.
