Keep the Chapel

To the Editor:

I am a 1969 grad from ISU. I recently received an Iowa newspaper article that told of the possible removal of the Memorial Union Chapel.

I must strongly protest such an action. The chapel, and the Browsing Library (also mentioned for possible changes), were placed where they are for specific reasons by the original architect of the building. To renovate these rooms for offices or to accommodate changes for fast food franchises marks a low point in the historical and sentimental values of the Memorial Union.

I’ve seen many renovations and additions to the Union over the years, mostly to accommodate offices. It really makes me wonder when this “expansion” will stop.

Granted, many more students attend ISU than when I did, but I seriously doubt the necessity for more offices to handle their affairs. Perhaps student offices have become overgrown and are trying to provide all things to everyone and duplicating some university services.

As for Mr. Mangan’s (student body president) comment that “Nobody uses it or knows it’s there,” has every student been asked? I doubt it. I recall numerous visits to the chapel during my five years at ISU. I’m not an organized religion person, but I, and I’m sure others too, find the need for quiet contemplation and meditation once in a while, away from the mainstream of society.

As for its “Judeo-Christian” nature, that’s easily changed. Remove any symbols that might offend someone so it can be used by anyone.

In closing, I stress again my dissatisfaction with any decision to remove/renovate the Union Chapel (and Browsing Library). They were put where they are for a purpose. It’s totally unreasonable to me that the space would, or could be used for anything else!
