Two Ames residents killed in Minnesota
September 5, 1995
An Iowa State alumnus and his wife were killed in a car-train accident Sunday near Winona, Minn.
Morris J. Muehlenthaler, 60, and wife Rona, 40, of rural Ames, were killed when a C.P. Rail Systems train struck their 1994 Chevy pickup at a railway crossing about 4:30 p.m., said Deputy Mike Miller of the Winona County Sheriff’s Office.
Morris Muehlenthaler held the Iowa State javelin throw record from 1956-72. He is now No. 5 on the list of all-time best throws, according to the ISU Sports Information Department.
The Muehlenthalers were returning to a local highway from a private gravel road when they were hit by the train, Miller said.
The train engineer told police the truck was stopped on the tracks about 350 feet from the moving 68-car train. The truck was pushed 125 feet down the track and flew 30 feet to the left, Miller said.
Three registered nurses were in the area and attempted to revive Rona Muehlenthaler, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Miller said. Morris Muehlenthaler was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in La Crosse, Minn., and was pronounced dead on arrival from massive trauma.
Rona Muehlenthaler’s 13-year-old daughter, Molly Garvey, and a 14-year-old friend, Leiha Spence, were also passengers in the truck. They were taken to Lutheran Medical Center and listed in critical condition.
