Juice bars face zoning ordinances

The Ames City Council instructed the city attorney to create zoning ordinances for juice bars at its meeting Tuesday night.

At the last City Council meeting, City Attorney John Klaus was instructed to research what other communities had done to discourage juice bar establishments, which feature nude dancing. Klaus said a change in zoning regulation was the solution with the most benefits and the least legal risk.

The current zoning regulations require adult entertainment businesses to be a least 1,000 feet from public parks, places of worship, public plazas and residentially zoned areas. Klaus said he would add nude performers to the definition of adult entertainment in the ordinance. The council became interested in zoning juice bars after it was rumored that a juice bar would move into Campustown.

Big Earl’s Goldmine, a juice bar located at 520 S. Duff Ave., would not be affected by the new zoning ordinances because the establishment predates the regulations, Klaus said.
