Improved E-Week kicks off

A new and improved Engineers’ Week, beginning Monday, Sept. 18, is on tap for Iowa State students.

The main thrust of this year’s E-Week is to “increase participation,” said co-chair Troy Blizzard.

To get the community involved in the event, the E-Week committee will set up booths at the mall with 11 displays, including the Formula 1 Car.

Area high school students will also be getting a taste of what’s happening in engineering fields.

Faculty members will be at the mall to answer questions and give input.

And even those ISU students that have nothing to do with engineering can join in the fun.

To compete in Thursday’s E-Week Olympics, a common student favorite, teams are only required to have one engineering student listed on their rosters.

The E-Week committee has also added new events. There will be 10 industrial round tables with company engineering representatives on hand to discuss topics such as a day in the life of an engineer, successful recruitment and career options for technical women.

Scholarships and a resume contest are new this year as well. The scholarships will go to two juniors. The best resumes will also receive monetary prizes based on the most organized format.

The E-Week committee is also planning to host mock interviews. The interviews will be taped this year so the students can look back on them to improve themselves.

The idea has gone over very well; six hours after the sign-up sheet was posted, all the time slots were full.

This year’s T-shirt logo is: “We do more after 2 a.m. than most people do all day.”

Lots of time and effort has gone into planning the week. A total of about 60-70 people have been involved in making this year’s E-Week a special event.

Co-chair Anh Nguyen said: “We are proud and amazed with the E-Week committee members. We give them something and they just run with it.”
