R.E.M.!

We’ve all been waiting to hear the news, and it’s finally fit to print: R.E.M. is confirmed to play a concert at Hilton Coliseum Tuesday, October 24. They’re making a stop in our fair city on the second leg of their tour in support of their most recent album.

From Chronic Town to Monster, these boys from Athens, Ga., have always been on the cutting edge of the “alternative” scene (way back when the word actually meant something!) and have even meandered into the realm of mainstream music.

In addition to their tunes, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into human interest causes.

Stipe is an outspoken environmentalist and AIDS awareness activist. These messages carry through to all of their music; from “Orange Crush” to “World Leader Pretend,” R.E.M. uses their fame and influence to speak to their fans.

Special guest Grant Lee Buffalo will open for the rock supergroup.

Tickets cost $37.75 and $27.75. They go on sale Saturday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. There is an eight-ticket limit per person on the sale.

Tickets are available at the Iowa State Center Box Office (free of any convenience charges) and Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone at 233-1888.

This show is brought to Ames by JAM Productions, Ltd., in conjunction with Cellar Door.
