Two Iowa State sororities are celebrating their 125th Anniversary.

Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta teamed up for a joint celebration ceremony on Oct. 5 at the Holiday Inn Gateway Center.

The Kappa Founder’s Day is Oct. 14 and the Theta’s was on Jan. 27 of this year.

Jill Lansing, public relations officer for Kappa Kappa Gamma, said, “This is a great way to get together and celebrate our anniversary.”

Tawna Williams, alumni relations chairwoman for Kappa Alpha Theta said, “Representatives will be there to list some of our accomplishments and alums from 10, 20 and 30 years ago will be attending.”

Lansing said the history of the two chapters will also be presented at the ceremony.

She said Kappa Kappa Gamma was the first sorority to publish a greek magazine 1882. The magazine, The Key, is still published today.

“In the decade of 1920-1929, the Kappas were the first women’s fraternity to establish a central office,” Lansing added. “In 1942, the Kappas were the first to set up service women’s centers.”

Among Kappa Alpha Theta’s most memorable moments, is the launching of their magazine called The Kite in the decade of 1910-1919. In 1960, the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation was established.

Williams said the Thetas paid off the mortgage of their house about five years ago, something alumni and active members boast of.

“We put on new additions and really made it a nice place. It was a nice accomplishment to pay off the debt,” Williams said.

The Kappas have between 80 and 90 active members while the Thetas have about 60 members.

Williams expects about 100 people to attend the ceremony.
