Operation Score was a success

Story County law enforcement officials are calling Operation Score a success.

Operation Score was a collaborative effort by law enforcement agencies throughout Story County concentrating on reducing the number of drunken/drugged drivers. The project was in place last weekend, Sept. 15-17, for the Iowa State-Iowa football game.

Agencies who participated included Story County Sheriffs Office, ISU Department of Public Safety, Iowa State Patrol and the Ames, Nevada, Huxley and Story City Police Departments.

Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald said he is pleased to see how all the agencies pulled together and made a county-wide effort to ensure a safer weekend.

“If you look at the arrests one can see the amount of drinking is something to be concerned about,” Fitzgerald said.

There were 24 contacts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) from the areas involved with the project. Fifteen of the contacts resulted in arrests.

Drivers were not the only ones targeted in the operation. There were 24 people arrested for public intoxication or public consumption. Also, 45 minors were stopped for underage possession of alcohol.

“We feel the weekend went very well from our perspective,” said Rob Bowers, a DPS captain. DPS arrested a couple of individuals operating a vehicle above the legal blood alcohol level. They could have been potentially dangerous, Bowers said.

There isn’t a future plan for Operation Score, but one could be put together quickly, Bowers said.
