There’s more to life
September 26, 1995
To the Editor:
Something peculiar struck me as I read an article which appeared in the Daily on Monday about the alcohol-related death of an Iowa student.
This peculiarity intensified as I scanned the police blotter for last weekend. There were 35 reports listed, of which 33 were alcohol related. Underage individuals contributed to 19 of the 33 incidents.
How serious are the alcohol problems in normal university settings, such as those here in Iowa?
Well, it is serious enough for the Board of Regents to “review its alcohol policies.” This gracious consideration is neither comforting nor promising. Legalities and policies will not stop students from doing what is condoned and acceptable.
We will continue to see similar incidents of alcohol abuse until the student body believes that there can be more to a college weekend and more to life than the thrill of intoxication.
