Korver is key ingredient in ISU golf recipe

After winning at least one tournament in each of his first three collegiate seasons, Travis Korver continues to amaze.
The Iowa State golfer won his fifth career tournament after taking the medalist honors at the Big Four Championship in Waterloo over the weekend. The tournament was the first of the season for the Cyclones.
That honor has earned Korver the Daily’s Cyclone Profile player of the week.
In the tournament, Korver won by two strokes over 27 holes.
“Travis won the tournament in grand style,” said Dale Anderson, ISU men’s golf coach.
Anderson considers Korver a rare commodity.
“Travis is rare in that he combines a strong work ethic with his considerable talent,” Anderson said. “Do I think he has tour potential? Yes.”
Korver said he hopes to attain three goals this season.
First, Korver would like to repeat last year’s honor as a first team All-Big Eight selection.
Korver said he would also like to average par for every tournament he plays in, and he would like to win a few more tournaments.
Anderson would like to add another credit to Korver’s growing list after this season, an honorable mention All-American honor.
He also believes that Korver can attain his own goal of winning a few more tournaments this year.
Anderson said Korver is a key ingredient to the team. The Cyclones hope to attain the goal of returning to the NCAA regionals this year, along with a national tournament berth.
Korver will be the Cyclones’ number one golfer at the Kansas Invitational September 25 and 26 after playing as the number three golfer last weekend, Anderson said.
“Although Travis does not qualify that well, he always picks it up a notch at tournaments,” Anderson said. “Travis is always well prepared.”
Anderson said Korver’s work ethic is a big key to his success.
“Travis does everything we ask of him. He always comes prepared, he doesn’t let a bad shot bother him, and he always does well in the classroom,” Anderson said.
After winning the Drake Relays Invitational in his freshman season, along with victories at the Big Four, Kansas Invitational and Embry Riddle tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., last year, this season should be promising for Korver and the Cyclone men’s squad.
