Tom Petty gets Hilton crowd all excited

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and their opener, Pete Droge, played to an enthusiastic crowd Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum, touting their 1995 “Dogs With Wings” tour.

Droge and the Sinners opened the stage bathed in a yellow-orange glow playing the folk-rock they are known for. Droge and the Sinners performed selections from their first album Necktie Second.

Petty and the Heartbreakers trumped their 1994 Greatest Hits album, and Petty’s triple-platinum solo work, Wildflowers Greatest Hits includes works which span over the group’s near 20-year existence. Among those is their first Top 40, “Breakdown,” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”

The crowd was on their feet and cheering before Petty and the Heartbreakers even stepped onto the darkened smoke-filled stage.

The stage, covered with antique carpets and scattered candles, surrounded the players as they blasted their openers. Fans readily sang along with well-knowns as, “I Won’t Back Down” and “Free Fallin’,” both from Full Moon Fever.

“You’re all excited pretty early,” Petty yelled to the crowd. “Should we go all the way?” The crowd responded with a resounding “Yeah!”

“You Don’t Know How It Feels” and “Wildflowers” were a hit. “It’s Good To Be King” from the same album tailed off with four to five minutes of guitar duetting by Petty and lead guitarist, Mike Campbell.

Fans at Hilton were also witness to some rare and unreleased pieces, one of which was a heavy guitar “Ridin’ Down To Georgia With My Mind Made Up.” Campbell performed a solo guitar piece titled, “Diamond-hand,” which also incorporated several household ditties and tunes.

Another song which Petty described as being “on the back side of one of our singles,” was a wry and humorous song about falling in love with addicted women.

The song, which received much applause, began each verse with, “I’m in love with a girl on …” and ended either with marijuana, cocaine, LSD, beer or coffee.

A disco ball illuminated the crowd towards the end of the night and after the last song Petty quickly bowed, gave his characteristic smile and left with the Heartbreakers.

After five minutes of cheering and flickering lighters, they reappeared to give a loud and powerful rendition of “Honey Bee” and “American Girl.”
